Better call in the painting contractors if you need help with DIY this year – the most popular places for work to be carried out in homes around the UK have been revealed, with gardens, bedrooms and kitchens coming top of the list.

According to Sainsbury’s Bank, two out of three adults say they have plans to do some sort of DIY project in the next year, with more than £22 billion in total spent by Brits in this way in the last 12 months. Projects include repainting floorboards, converting the attic and putting up shelves.

Other areas of the house that people will be focusing on in the coming year include the bathroom, living room, the drive or front garden and the exterior of the home, from the windows to the roof.

No matter what sort of project you have in mind, be aware that there are sure to be some jobs that are better left up to the professional painters and decorators. You don’t want to spend all this money on paint only to have it go wrong, after all.

And remember as well that if there is any electrical work that needs doing at home, you are certainly better off asking a qualified electrician to do it for you. If you’re confident in your own skills, check that the work you’re doing doesn’t have to be notified for Part P compliance.

You may need to certificate the work being done, so you’ll have to give evidence that you’re a competent person and that you’ve done the job correctly.
